"아날로그적 낭만에 대한 향수가 통한 거죠"
지난달 8집 정규 앨범을 발매한 지 일주일만에 음반판매차트에서 판매량 1위를 기록해 화제가 된 타이거JK. 그의 음반 제작을 맡은 정글엔터테인먼트의 최승용 부장은 "앨범이 잘 돼야 5만 장 정도 나갈 줄 알고 8만 장을 찍었는데. 벌써 거의 나간 상태다. 최근 며칠간 공장으로 출근해 밤새도록 CD를 만들고 있는데 공장 야근이 몇년 만인지 기억이 가물가물하다"면서 팬들의 뜨거운 반응에 기뻐했다. 그는 또 "아이들 스타도 아니고 힙합이라는 비주류 장르의 가수가 1억원을 들여 정규 음반 제작한다고 해서 주위에서도 다들 미친 짓이라며 말렸다"고 준비 과정의 어려움을 털어놓기도 했다.
최 부장에 따르면 통상 정규 음반의 순이익율은 30~40％ 수준으로 평균적인 손익분기점은 1CD는 3만장. 2CD는 5만장이다. 타이거JK는 음반이 날개 돋힌 듯 팔려 손익분기점은 넘겼지만 뮤직비디오 제작에 또다시 1억원을 쓰는 바람에 수익은 크지 않을 것으로 보고 있다. 정규 음반으로는 '대박'을 터뜨려도 여간해서는 수익을 내기 힘든 적자 구조일 수 밖에 없다.
타이거 JK 역시 당초에는 싱글의 시대에 역행하기 힘들어서 8집 앨범을 마지막 정규 음반으로 계획했었다고 한다. 이를 위해 팬서비스 차원에서 2CD에 27곡이나 담았는데도 음반 가격은 1CD 수준으로 책정했다. 소속사는 "저렴한 음반 가격도 무시할 수 없는 요인"이라고 설명하면서 "가장 중요한 것은 음악의 완성도다. 최근 힙합계에서 정규 음반이 워낙 귀하다보니 아날로그적 낭만에 대한 향수를 자극한 것 같다"고 성공 요인을 분석했다.
타이거 JK는 이번 성공을 바탕으로 정규 음반 발매에 한번 더 도전할 계획이다. 그의 아내인 윤미래도 올 가을 선보일 앨범을 정규 음반으로 계획 중이며. 힙합계의 후배인 리쌍도 타이거JK의 성공에 자극받아 6집 앨범 제작에 용기를 얻는 등 가요계 전반에도 긍정적인 힘을 불어넣고 있다.
음반 제작에 1억 5000만원. 뮤직비디오 제작에 5000만원 등 8집 앨범에 2억원을 쏟아부은 MC몽도 음반 판매만으로는 적자 상태다. 소속사 측은 "돈만 생각했을 때는 정규 음반을 낼 엄두를 내기 힘들다"면서 "MC몽은 팬들에게 음악을 선보일 때 마다 개념과 스토리가 있어야 한다고 생각하는데. 한곡의 싱글로는 쉽지 않다"고 정규 음반을 고집하는 이유를 밝혔다.
